I tell people steam boilers should last 25 to 30 years. There is one make and model that consistantly fail in about 15 years in my area, both steam and water versions. My boiler's manual says to fill the boiler at the end of the heating season. You're supposed to bring the water to near boiling to drive off the oxygen.
